ULC Technologies’ X-ID Acoustic Cross Bore Detection Solution Secures First Commercial Contract with Leading Gas Utility

ULC Technologies is proud to announce a major milestone for its X-ID Acoustic Cross Bore Detection system, which has been awarded its first commercial contract by a leading gas distribution utility in North America. This accomplishment represents a significant step forward in advancing pipeline safety and modernizing cross bore detection practices across the industry.

X-ID is a revolutionary solution that uses acoustic sensing to identify cross bores—accidental intersections between natural gas pipelines and sewer laterals—that pose serious safety risks to the public. These hidden threats can result in dangerous gas releases and risk public safety if left unresolved.

“This first commercial contract demonstrates the industry’s growing confidence in the effectiveness, speed, and accuracy of the X-ID solution,” said Ryan McGowan, VP Operations at ULC Technologies. “We’re proud to deliver a solution that enhances public safety and helps utilities meet increasingly stringent regulatory requirements.”

Supporting Pipeline Safety Regulations

Federal and state regulators have issued clear guidance that operators must identify, mitigate, and document cross bore risks as part of their Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP) obligations. Many utilities are also responding to state-level mandates that require proactive inspection of for cross bores during gas line installation, which is often burdened by the challenge of inspecting and mapping pipe the gas utility doesn’t own.

By enabling non-invasive, rapid, and data-driven detection, X-ID helps utilities:

  • Comply with DIMP requirements
  • Reduce excavation and inspection costs
  • Protect public health and property
  • Inspect and map the gas mains and services they own and operate

ULC Technologies remains committed to innovating technologies that make utility operations safer, smarter, and more sustainable.
