SGN is continuing to invest in innovative technology that supports Ofgem’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and driving progress toward net zero. A key example featured in SGN’s latest Environment Report is the use of drawdown compressors – including the ULC Technologies DDC-125 – to cut methane emissions from essential gas network operations.
Reducing Emissions and Waste
Traditionally, when a gas main is decommissioned, remaining gas is released into the atmosphere. With the DDC-125 Drawdown Compressor, SGN is now able to recover up to 95% of this gas and reinject it back into the live network.
On a recent London project, the technology recovered more than 17,700 cubic feet of gas, preventing 28.7 tons of CO₂e emissions. That’s equivalent to driving 136,000 miles or the annual energy use of 12 homes.
Improving Safety and Efficiency
The compressor is not only cutting emissions but also delivering significant safety and efficiency benefits. Operations that previously took up to 14 hours can now be completed in just 90 minutes, reducing disruption for local communities and minimizing work in sensitive areas. By reducing venting, SGN is able to enhance safety and reduce public concern during essential maintenance.
Recognized for Innovation
The compressors were first introduced in 2023 following a successful Ofgem-funded trial and have since been used across more than ten projects, including major works in Mitcham, south London, and on the Isle of Wight. In recognition of its impact, the DDC-125 was awarded the Net Zero Innovation Award at the 2025 Gas Industry Awards.
Phil Pearson, Head of UK Operations at ULC Technologies, said:
“ULC Technologies and Flowstop Services are proud to collaborate with SGN in advancing the transition to a lower carbon energy future through the development and deployment of the DDC-125 Drawdown Compressor. Seeing the compressor move from trial phase to wider network implementation is a powerful example of how partnership and innovation can drive meaningful climate action.”
Supporting Net Zero Goals
By using of drawdown compressors across its projects, SGN is demonstrating its commitment to reducing methane emissions, improving operational safety, and supporting Ofgem’s drive for a sustainable, lower-carbon energy system.
